Mary Qian's Paintings

Chinese artist Mary Qian is a gifted figurative painter who essentially learned how to paint by reading books. Enrolling in art colleges was impossible in China, so she studied science and dentistry instead. But because to her parents' acquaintances, she was able to attend Brigham Young University in Utah to study painting.  American Impressionist painter Mary Qian was born in China. Her BFA in Fine Arts and Illustration from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, was awarded to her in 1998. Shanghai, China is her birthplace. Mary now works as a graphic designer and resides in the United States. She also finds time each day to practice painting for many hours. She mostly uses oil paintings, and the female figure is a recurring element in her pieces.

Mary Qian studied Chinese calligraphy and independent painting while attending a traditional Chinese school that placed a strong emphasis on the sciences. Despite her long-standing admiration for Chinese paintings, she became fixated by western artists and their approaches. She was always a fan of Repin, Velazquez, and other realists.  After graduating in 1998, Mary Qian went on to win several art honors, including a commendation medal at the 2000 "Spring Salon" of the Springville Museum of Art. She works as a graphic designer full-time and paints fine art for many hours every night. She paints figures on Saturdays along with a group of other painters, but she also produces still lifes and landscapes. She lives in the USA at the moment.
