Artist Joseph Claude Bail 

(Joseph Claude Bail, 1862, Limoges - 1921, Paris) - French realist painter.

Bail was born in 1862 in Limoges in the Rhone region of France. His father, Jean-Antoine (April 8, 1830 - October 20, 1919), himself was engaged in the training of a young artist on the example of the Dutch masters and works of Jean-Simeon Chardin, a follower of whom he considered himself to be. From here, Joseph had a love for genre scenes from everyday life, which became a favorite topic. Claude's older brother, Frank, was also an artist.

Since all three members of the family, Jean-Antoine, Frank and Claude Joseph, were artists, the Baile family was one of the few family associations that promoted their work with realistic traditions in the second half of the 19th century, when the impressionists and representatives of other areas. Father and sons were even exhibited next to each other at the annual Salons.

At 16, Claude made his debut in the Salon of 1878, along with his father and brother, with a small still life.

Between 1879 and 1880, Claude-Joseph continued his studies in the workshop of Jean-Leon Gerome.

Bail had to look for himself in this "stylistic anarchy" of the late nineteenth century. In any case, his work was influenced by the "little Dutch" of the seventeenth century and the traditional classical painting of France of the eighteenth century.

In a reference to contemporary French painting, published in New York in 1914, author Cady Eton wrote: Claude-Joseph Beil “is an attractive and popular artist, his paintings are comfortable and cozy, they are not amazing and ambitious, although social.
