Artist Ignacio Díaz de Olano (1860 - 1937)

Ignacio Diaz Olano - Spanish / Basque artist. Born on February 1, 1860 in the city of Vitoria in the province of Alava of the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (Spain).

He began to study painting at the School of Fine Arts in his hometown of Vitoria, which in the second half of the 19th century was a workshop for many famous artists such as Fernando de America, Adrian Aldecoa and others.

Between 1876 and 1880, thanks to a scholarship from the Vitoria City Council for his artistic abilities, Diaz de Olano continued his studies at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, where one of his teachers was the artist Gustavo Bakarishas.

After studying, Diaz de Olano went to Paris, where for some time he worked as an artist at the Opera House.

In 1884, thanks to his friend Felipe Arriete, he made a trip to Rome, where he continued his study of painting.

In 1886, the artist returned to his homeland and settled in the Basque capital, where he founded his own school of painting and became a teacher for a large number of artists.

Basically, the artist worked in genre painting, but also painted portraits, still life and landscape.

Today, the largest collection of the artist’s works is in the Museum of Fine Arts of the Alava province, and in his hometown of Vitoria, one of the streets is named after him.

Ignacio Diaz Olano died in Vitoria on March 7, 1937.
