Luke Hillstad
kitsch aestheticism figurative and primitive paintings on the hatch and
Hillestad well, the artist from Minneapolis, worthy successor to the
glorious tradition of the legendary Odd Nerdrum (Eng. Odd
Nerdrum).
Luke Hillestad is an American artist. Born 1982 in Minneapolis. In
2006, he left his job as a land surveyor and began writing full
time.
Opening books about the work of Rembrandt and Odd Nerdrum next to a
blank canvas, he plunged headlong into his studies, then studied with
Odd Nerdrum himself and traveled all over the world, visiting museums
and studios to find out from the paintings the secrets of the masters of
the past, whose traditions he seeks to follow.
Using the palette of the ancient Greek painter Apelles Luke and a
collection of mummified animals, the artist tried to illustrate the
primitive beauty of people in its most noble presentation, placing his
characters in the center of paintings on the themes of death, kinship,
rituals and nature.
Luke Hillstad is represented at The Rymer Gallery in Nashville, L'oeil du
Prince Gallery in Paris and Flanders and Rogue Buddha galleries in
Minneapolis. His work has also been featured in exhibitions in
Florida.
