Artist Robert Fowler was born in the small Scottish town of Anstruther, Fife County, but the family settled in Liverpool, and Robert lived there for most of his life.

Despite the obvious artistic ability, his parents, being true Scots, sent the boy to trade, and then, succumbing to his son's persuasion, allowed him to study construction and architecture.

His teachers liked the drawings very much, and they convinced his parents that the young man should become an artist.

So he went to London to study at the art school at the Academy of Arts. But soon he was forced to leave the Academy school due to health problems.

After his recovery, he lived in Yorkshire, worked as an artist in Liverpool, showed his work at autumn exhibitions from 1875, and at the RA (Royal Academy) - from the following year.

He sent photographs of paintings abroad, won recognition in Germany.

He worked very fruitfully in his Liverpool studio, which became a haven for aspiring poets, prose writers, musicians and artists.

In the early 1900s, Fowler moved permanently to London.

Fowler's works cannot be attributed to any particular direction in painting: there are features of symbolism,

classical style, influenced by Leighton, Albert Moore, strongly influenced by Japanese art.

The works of the 1880s are classic paintings depicting girls among flowers and various vases. Experts say the artist has shamelessly combined classical figures with Japanese tableware.

He also painted a kind of fantastic landscapes - female figures against the background of forests, lakes, seas are their integral part.
