Artist Ralph Hedley
Artist Ralph Hedley (1851-1913) was a realist, woodcarver and illustrator known for his paintings depicting scenes from everyday life in the north of England.
Headley was born in Richmond, and two years later his family moved to Newcastle upon Tyne.
He studied art and design in this city at a public school. After completing his studies, he established himself as a successful portrait and landscape painter, as well as an experienced woodcarver. Examples of his woodcarving work can be found in St Andrew's Church and St Nicholas Cathedral in Newcastle, where he designed the altar.
Headley began exhibiting his paintings in Newcastle in 1878. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of British Artists and later Vice President of the South Shields Art Club.
Today Headley's paintings are prized for portraying everyday life at Tyneside in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Shortly before the artist's death, the Newcastle Daily Chronicle recognized the value of his work, arguing that "what Burns did for the peasantry of Scotland with his pen, Ralph Headley made his brush and palette for the working man."
