Artist Lu Jian Jun

Lu Jian Jun, contemporary Chinese artist, creator of the art movement called Symmetrim, author of the Symmetrism Art Declaration. The artist paints his paintings in oil using the technique of the same name. He was born in 1960 in Hangzhou, located near West Lake in Zhejiang Province, China. 1960 was a year of natural disasters spanning more than three years, which subsequently led to a great famine that killed a third of the province's population.

Liu's survival was regarded by many as a God-given miracle, given that many others were far less fortunate. Artistic imagination, understanding of the human condition and undeniable skill eventually led Liu Jianjun to the Central Academy of Fine Arts of China, from which the artist graduated with a degree, and later, to the position of professor at the Academy of Painting of Shandong Province. The technique, focus and intensity of his work are often compared with the paintings of late 19th century artists who wrote in the style of Russian academicism.

The acquaintance of Professor Liu with the Russian academic painting of Ilya Repin and his contemporaries is so impressive that it could not but influence the artist's work. Professor Liu's paintings have been awarded prizes in numerous Chinese and foreign art exhibitions and have found their way into some of the most significant private collections. Also, reproductions of his works have been published in newspapers and magazines.
