Born in Hinsdale, Illinois in 1913, They were among the first painters, according to Vickery, to break free from the tyranny of the "browngravy school" of marine painting. Charles Vickery later attended the Art Institute of Chicago and the American Academy of Fine Arts, although he frequently cited Lake Michigan as his most important teacher. The motivation it offered and the lessons it taught him were far more valuable to him than the tedious principles he had to master. "Movement is the key," Vickery remarked. "In the time it takes to blink your eyes, the wind may produce unexpected drama." The difficulty, according to him, was to honour nature's continual interplay—the sun, sky, wind, and water all working together. With that in mind, he always saw himself as a learner.

There were some difficult years. Charles Vickery work was very experimental when he launched his first art studio in Western Springs in 1937, and paintings sold for as low as five dollars or, in some cases, a bowl of ice cream. He began by working as a surveyor's assistant, a silkscreen operator, a mail clerk, and a woodworker. Charles Vickery  passed away in September 1998, at the age of 85.
