Charles-Amable Lenoir's Paintings

Charles-Amable Lenoir (October 22, 1860, Châtlayon – August 1, 1926, Fouras) was a French academic artist and student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau [1] [2]. Portraits and paintings on mythical and religious topics were the principal subjects of Charles-Amable Lenoir's work. The Prize of Rome was awarded to him twice, and he was made a Chevalier of the Order of the Legion of Honor.

Lenoir was born in Châtlayon, a tiny hamlet near La Rochelle. His mother was a milliner, while his father worked for the government as a customs officer. Lenoir studied education in La Rochelle and then served as a teacher and administrator at the Lycée de Rochefort. Later, the father was given a new job, and the family relocated to Fura.

Charles-Amable Lenoir was enrolled to the Paris School of Fine Arts in August 1883. In addition, he enrolled at the Académie Julian, where he studied under Bouguereau and Robert-Fleury. Charles-Amable Lenoir made his artistic debut at the Salon de Paris in 1887, where he exhibited for the rest of his life. Charles-Amable Lenoir was made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1903. He spent every summer at his villa in Foura, where he died on August 1, 1926. In his honour, a memorial was constructed in the city in 1937.
