Otto Didrik Ottesen's Paintings

Artist Otto Didrik Ottesen (1816-1892) was born into a farming family. He was compelled to work as a shepherd and aid in the peasant economy from the age of eight to eighteen before making it to Copenhagen, where he began painting under a great painter. Otto Didrik Ottesenwas then accepted into the Academy of Arts and became an artist in 1839. He did not finish his education at the Academy of Fine Arts, however, and instead continued his education by studying the techniques of the Dutch masters. He debuted at Charlottenborg in 1842 with the painting "Flower," which depicted two fruits and one flower. ottesen

hastened Otto Didrik Ottesen hone his abilities as a painter, and it was critical for him to show himself as an artist as quickly as possible, because Ottesen's peasant origins required him to be recruited into military duty. When King Christian VIII viewed his still lifes at the exhibition, he released him from this duty and even purchased one of his paintings. The Royal Painting Collection also purchased one of Otto Didrik Ottesen's still lifes, Roses and Strawberries, in 1844, and progressively acquired some of his most notable pieces.

Otto Didrik Ottesen frequently painted flowers from his own garden, and the rose was his unquestionable favourite. Despite being limited to one genre, he developed a wide range of stories throughout the course of his long and profitable career. He could effectively build fresh stunning compositions from flowers or fruits, whether he painted them or plucked them or grew them spontaneously. Otto Didrik Ottesen travelled to Holland to study painting in 1855-1856, with the help of the Academy of Travel, and also toured the beautiful south of France. His canvases gained graphic flexibility and a distinct richness of shadows once he returned to Europe as a fellow in 1874.

Otto Didrik Ottesen was elected to the Academy in 1866, professor in 1874, member of the Academy Council in 1887, and knight of the Dannebrog in the same year as his death.
The artist was married three times and widowed twice before marrying the daughter of a foreign exchange dealer for the third time in 1867. Although flowers have always been his subject of fascination, his work is not consistent. Otto Didrik Ottesen makes traditional still lifes and gives equal attention to weeds and animals, as well as presenting unadorned plants in their naturalistic way. Ottesen's paintings were well-known and in high demand all around the world. Otto Didrik Ottesen exhibited at the annual show every year until his death, a total of 52 times with 209 pieces. Otto Didrik Ottesen's works may be seen at museums in Denmark, including Copenhagen, Aalborg, Aarhus, and Odense, as well as private collections.
