"Young Italian woman at the table", Paul Cezanne

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French painter who established and popularized Post-Impressionism. Cezanne's paintings were only recognized in the master's final years because they were half a century ahead of their time. The artist's method of conjugation of line, color, and stroke was outstanding for its astonishing logic and influenced more than one generation of painters.

A young woman is seated at a table draped with a gorgeous patterned linen in the picture. She stares to the side, her head resting on her bent arm. Sharpness and tension may be seen in this basic stance. The artist creates a sorrowful ambiance by juxtaposing a white blouse, yellow scarf, and colorful fabric with a black skirt and a neutral background.

Cezanne penned the piece in bold, sweeping strokes and moulded the face of his heroine like a sculptor. The master leaves no room for question regarding the girl's bodily presence in the conditional interior.
