Franz Xaver Kosler's Paintings

Austrian Orientalist painter Franz Xaver Kosler was  born August 16, 1864, in Vienna. He started his creative career in 1881 after being accepted into the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. He trained under renowned Orientalist Leopold Carl Müller (1834–1892) from 1884 to 1885; Franz Xaver Kosler's genre settings and portraits show Müller's influence.

Franz Xaver Kosler traveled around Dalmatia, Montenegro, and Albania in 1886. He also made his first trip to Egypt in 1892, motivated by Müller. Kosler frequently spent the winters in Egypt throughout the next years, and Cairo hosted his first group show. As a result, he gained notoriety and fortune quickly and received several portrait commissions, one from Prince Said Halim Pasha, the future Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire and Mehmet Ali Pasha's grandson. This Egyptian ruler also purchased further Kosler pieces. The painter created two portraits of the Archduke Ferdinand Charles in Vienna in 1895. He painted Countess Palfy-Schilippenback's portrait in 1896.

Franz Xaver Kosler painted "The Greengrocers, Cairo" and "The Blind Beggar" and met a number of affluent English art patrons in Cairo. He also displayed these two paintings at the Royal Academy in London. A few years after his death, in 1906, Cosler's artwork was displayed in the Royal Academy Exhibition, proving how well-liked he was among English art enthusiasts. Many of his works are still owned by individual English collectors. In 1895, Franz Xaver Kosler held his first exhibition in Vienna, and he joined the Society of Artists in 1901. He kept attending the Viennese salons on a regular basis over the ensuing several years. In 1899, he had another exhibition at the Munich Glass Palace.

Among his most well-known pieces is the painting "Portrait of a Young Beauty." Franz Xaver Kosler was a master at highlighting a model's qualities and softening defects without sacrificing the heroines' portrait likeness or their sense of opulence and secular magnificence. The artist became well-known and recognized for this talent.

One indication of Cosler's popularity among English art enthusiasts is the inclusion of his work in the 1906 Royal Academy exhibition, which took place soon after his passing. Many of his works are still in the possession of British collectors today. Another piece in a private collection is a portrait of a young, attractive woman.

Der österreichische orientalistische Maler Franz Xaver Kosler wurde am 16. August 1864 in Wien geboren und starb am 15. Dezember 1905 in Syrakus.

geboren am 16. August 1864 in Wien.
