“Ali” and “Nino”: the story of a statue narrating a tragic love story between a young Muslim and a Christian girl

On the shore of the city of “Batumi” on the Black Sea in Georgia, a metal statue of a man and a woman stands without clear features. An exciting sight that tourists await daily to take souvenir photos.

This statue embodies the protagonists of a novel inspired by a realistic love story that brought together a young Muslim man from Azerbaijan named “Ali” and a Georgian Christian princess named “Nino” but they were separated due to the different religions and families in light of the worsening political conditions after the Russian intervention in Azerbaijan during the First World War, which ended with the killing Ali 😥.

It is noteworthy that the statue was designed by the Georgian sculptor "Tamara Kvistadze", which reached 8 meters in length and was installed in 2010, to narrate a love story that developed between 1918 and 1920.

Every night at 7pm, the two figures begin to move towards one another until they collide and for a brief moment, become one. After uniting, Ali and Nino move away from one another. Lights accompany their nightly, infinite dance. Th statues are sure to move you and make your heart beat faster in anticipation. Tamara Kvesitadze‘s statue is not just a celebration of Ali and Nino. It’s a reflection of real life and the way love touches our lives. It’s a very big reminder to cherish one’s loved ones.
