Artist Dorren St.John
Doreen
St.John's paintings demonstrate her love of the natural environment: “I'm
inspired by the way light and color influence what we see and feel...not only
in the landscape but also in the human form.
My work is really about Relationship in the deepest sense of the
word....relationships between shapes, light/shadow, and between the viewer and
the artist, scene, or subject. The words
of Li Po, an 8th Century Chinese Philosopher, echo my own sentiments. Since the
early 1980's, St.John exhibited her work in juried outdoor art shows, was
represented in several galleries in Ohio, conducted workshops, and won numerous
awards, including “Best in Show” for her watercolor and mixed media
paintings. After several years away from
painting to pursue a Master’s degree in Administrative Leadership, she joined
the Ohio Plein Air Society in 2005 and started painting again, inspired by her
love of nature and painting outdoors. In
2010, St.John retired from her education career and was able to devote more
time to her art, concentrating on works in oil and, more recently, pastel. Her frequent travels in the United States and
abroad provide a wealth of inspiration for her plein air and studio works, as
well as painting the figure and portraits from life as time permits. Since 2015, St. John has achieved Signature
status with the Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society,
and the Pastel Society of America, a remarkable achievement. She is a Board Member and Secretary of both
the American Impressionist Society and the Ohio Plein Air Society.
