An Italian Woman Crossing a Stream with Children | 1862 By Artist Johann Köhler

An Italian Woman Crossing a Stream with Children (1862)

Painting by the Estonian artist Johann Köhler (1826-1899) , painted in 1862. It is part of the collection of the Kumu Museum in Tallinn. The painting is in oil on canvas and measures 82.5 cm high and 53.5 cm wide. The picture is one of the examples of the perception of Italy in Northern Europe and belongs to the realist works of Köhler, who has departed from academic painting. From 1858 to 1859 the artist was in Italy, so the painting is inspired by his own experience. It belongs to the so-called Italian period of the artist's work.

The painting depicts a woman in full growth. She steps into the water with her left foot, while her right foot is still on the shore. She is wearing a traditional costume and a necklace. On her head is a basket in which there is a small child. In her left hand, the woman carries a vessel. To the right, next to her, a small boy in an open cape is standing in the water. The stream occupies only a small area in the foreground of the picture. Behind it opens a landscape with a rocky shore and vegetation. In the upper left corner of the image there is a single large, spreading tree, which with its crown rises above a child in a basket on a woman's head. The landscape and the scene in the foreground form a single compositional whole. This Köhler canvas stands out for its vibrant color palette.

Carl Timoleon von Neff's Paintings

Artist Carl Timoleon von Neff was a Famous 19th-century painter, exemplar of mature academicism, court artist to Nicholas I, gifted portraitist, creator of colossal temple paintings, and painter of works with historical subjects. As a portrait painter, Carl Timoleon von Neff made his mark on art history. His female portraits with heavenly features were very emotive. By highlighting the nobility and impeccable manners, the natural beauty of the features, and the porcelain whiteness of his models' skin, he expertly communicated the likeness of a painting. The artist paid close attention to the described details, clothing, and accessories. Carl Timoleon von Neff captured the beauty and wealth of the surroundings in ceremonial portraits.A chamber portrait by Carl Timoleon von Neff, a romantic artist who values the image of feminine elegance, holds a distinct position in his body of work. In this picture, he portrays images of his renowned "bathers," virgins of exquisite beauty. Such paintings were common in secular societies, graced the private areas of wealthy homes, and thrilled the eye with the piquancy of their subject matter. Despite the plot's seeming impersonality and the image's collectiveness, each heroine is actually hiding a distinct personality that the artist has disguised as a Nymph or another biblical figure.

"The Little Girl of Bonchamp in 1793" By The French Painter Jean Paul Laurent | ArtLiveAndBeauty

"The Little Girl of Bonchamp in 1793", 1893 - French painter, muralist, sculptor, graphic artist and illustrator Jean Paul Laurent.

In a major battle at Cholet in 1793, the Vendean rebel army was badly defeated, and their leader, Charles de Bonchamp, was mortally wounded. His wife fled with their daughter and son, who died on the way, but they were eventually captured. The wife escaped execution, as the dying Bonchamps pardoned 5,000 captured French republicans who were to be executed after the battle, since the defeated army could not take them with them.

Bonchamp's young daughter Zoe, who was sent to court for a pardon letter, was asked by the judges to sing the song. She spontaneously sang "Long Live, Long Live the King, Down with the Republic". The judges were touched by the resourcefulness of the little girl, and she left the court with a letter of pardon to her mother.

Emile Munier 🇫🇷 (1840 – 1895) | A French academic Painter | ArtLiveAndBeauty

Émile Munier's Paintings

Emile Munier (June 2, 1840, Paris – June 29, 1895) was a French academic artist who studied under William-Adolf Bouguereau [1] [2]. Émile Munier was born in a tapestry factory, the son of an upholsterer, while his mother worked as a polisher in a fabric business. Émile and his two brothers, François and Florimond, were skilled painters who worked at a tapestry factory for a period. There aren't many painters in art history who have committed their careers to painting children's portraits. For example, in order to capture charming, naughty, and impulsive children, the artist must have a great deal of patience and affection for them. These characteristics were abundant in the French artist of the mid-nineteenth century, Emile Munier, who was regarded as the finest painter of his day and committed himself fully to this genre. And his attitude toward his barefoot heroes, who elicit joy and affection from the audience, is not sentimentality at all, but the artist's own drama.

French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904)

French artist Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904)
Jean-León Gerome - painter and sculptor, representative of academism (sometimes attributed to the style of "Greek").
At the age of 9, he entered the local gymnasium, where he showed artistic inclinations and began to learn the technique of drawing. His main mentor was Claude Karjage, introducing the foundations of academic painting to his ward.
In high school years, Jerome made a successful copy of one of the paintings of A. Decampus, Paul Delaroche saw her and spoke highly of Jean's talent. This helped to convince the father to let his son go to Paris, where he went in 1841, having a letter of recommendation from Karjage. My father did not get tired of repeating that artists, unlike jewelers, were poor, and in the end gave his son a year to achieve artistic success.
