It was a turning point in Joe's life, not only in his physical ability, but also in his attitude and approach to painting.

In 1992, Joe was elected to the Society of Illustrators in 1952 and to the Illustrators Hall of Fame. In 1967, the Artists Guild of New York named Bowler Artist of the Year.

In 1972, the artist moved with his wife Marilyn to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. In his work, there was a transition from illustration to portrait painting.
